Welcome to the New HTTP Site!

2025.05.10

For those who weren’t aware, this site was originally a Gemini capsule launched in 2023, which (for the time being) can be found at gemini://sdf.org/rg19/, though most of the original (badly written) content was brought over here to fill the initial void.

Change is in the air now after building the 2.0 version of Rose Garden 19, and as usual I’ve got some ideas brewing on the hearth. The first task is finishing and eventually publishing a couple of articles I was working on two years ago as part of the Core Dump series of blog posts. After that I might tinker with a story that was posted at the Gemini site and which is in dire need of a major rewrite… I might even start a new series about FreeBSD, which has been my favorite non-Linux operating system for quite a while now and seems to be worth writing about, though it won’t be just a bunch of rants about how I failed to RTFM and eventually got it working. At some point I’m going to start a series about the command line tools that I use on a daily basis, which is inspired by the Inconsolation blog that helped push me onto this path in the first place. Along the way I’ll be trying to fix a few bugs around this new site, such as the fonts not working quite the way I’d hoped.

Some of the biggest changes will involve the Tape Reel getting a proper software repository for others to clone if they are interested in what will eventually be stored there, and I might even bring the Telegraph over from the old site, though in this case it would probably be an RSS feed. I swore to never add JavaScript to this site and I doubt anything can ever change my mind about that, but at some point there might be some kind of hit counter so I can at least see if anyone is actually visiting my tiny little corner of the web… Finally, I’m going to build an FAQ of some kind, because it seems like people might have a question or two about the spartan minimalism on display here, and I might have an answer or two.

It seems fitting that my new website was launched around the time of Beltane, which is the Gaelic beginning of summer and the transformation of the land as the flowers and trees begin to bloom. Here is to new beginnings and fresh new content for the Garden.
